Louis Pastour, "the painter of the sun

The Musée de la Castre in Cannes exhibits the works of the painter Louis Pastour (1876-1948). He expresses with talent the views of the city and its surroundings. "Louis Pastour, the painter of the sun" will continue until 24/05/2020.

A recognizable personal style

The artist is classified in the post-impressionist artistic current. Firstly, he composed numerous seascapes from the site known as the Pantiero. This esplanade is located in the extension of the port where the local fishermen meet. Secondly, his colorful and relief style stands out thanks to his preference for the use of the knife. The impasto of pure colors juxtaposed melt to our vision when we take a good distance from the canvas.

In short, this relief allows a warm light vibration that seduces the public.

Born in Cannes, he chose to stay in his native town to found a school of Fine Arts. He participates in the local cultural life with energy.

The quotation

The slight variation of its quotation on the art market today is of little importance. It remains appreciated by artists and art lovers. Moreover, Marguerite Marght already exhibited it in her first store (according to the testimony of her granddaughter Yoyo who tells this anecdote in her book "La saga Maeght au début du XX ème siècle".

The reference site Artprice mentions nearly 870 auctions in total recorded worldwide

There is nothing more beautiful than to start the year from the panoramic view accessible from the Square Tower in the Suquet district of Cannes.

Le Suquet offers a 360 degree panoramic view. From the Croisette point, through the Lerins islands, to the reddish Esterel massif, the landscape ends with the snowy peaks of the Alps. The azure blue sky draws a perfect horizon line with the calm sea which gives us a feeling of plenitude from the promontory.

In these often renewed conditions, it is not surprising that the flagship city of the French Riviera became a privileged vacation spot since the beginning of the 19th century. This is how many artists, including Louis Pastour, Pierre Bonnard and many others, came to be inspired by this area.

Authentic Cannes

This historic district of Suquet remains away from the glitter of the Croisette. Nearby, the Cathedral of Notre Dame de Bon Voyage welcomed the Emperor Napoleon. At the bottom of the hill, the historic heart of the city is concentrated around the port, the town hall and the Forville market.

At the turn of the 20th century, luxury shops had already been established a little further away. Close to the streets of Antibes and the Croisette, they were at equal distance between the train station and the seaside. Since the arrival of Lord Brougham in 1834, the town's development has continued to grow, successfully reconciling the economy and local life.

Louis Pastour wonderfully symbolizes this art of living in Cannes at the beginning of the XXth century until the birth of the Film Festival.
