"What are the limits of Truth in Art?"

"Life is a movie" Ben

Ben Vautier (1935) questions us in his works. What are the limits of truth in art? The artist-philosopher guides us in his exhibition "Life is a film".

From June 15 to October 19, 2019, Ben Vautier (86 years old in great shape) invests the former slaughterhouses of Nice converted for 10 years into a space dedicated to contemporary art the great Hall of 109. Located in an out-of-the-way neighborhood, without much publicity, more than 10,500 people have already made the detour.

As soon as I entered, I recognized the "crates" of vegetables whose prices I had the opportunity to study during an expertise mission following an accidental breakage.

Exhibition of Ben's works commented by the artist from Nice

The space is divided into 3 parts: Ben's works, his personal collection and artists invited to exhibit a work on the theme of Truth and Limits in Contemporary Art.

  • Helped by his friend Robert ROUX, delegate of the City to the service of the Culture, he makes us the joy to guide in person and with a lot of poetry our group resulting from the association "Art Food Monaco".
  • The idea of sharing the exhibition space with artists "outside the system" is a constant. Here he puts forward more than 100 artists from Nice or close to the Fluxus movement, born in the 1960s. Marcel Duchamp and John Cage in the United States count for Ben.
  • The latter explains that he wanted to reproduce what was done in New York, hence the idea of happening on the Promenade des Anglais (see "on sale the skyline as a work of art" signed Ben).

The Truth in Art

The theme of Truth and its limits are exciting topics of debate. Artists do not always share the same vision. By the way, concerning the Ego of the artists, Ben tells. Finally, we managed to "Write everyone's name in the same format".

  • Far from the Parisian analyses, he lives as a man curious to constantly seek out the new. He says "

A bouquet of flowers painted like Van Gogh does not interest me. I look for the novelty no matter the notoriety or the artist. Here a wall of drawers painted in a naive style. There this work of Combas takes again the topic of the coulure".

  • He goes on to talk about the memories between him and the "support-surfers". "A fight of ideas ends in the bar," he adds.

  • Besides, he takes us towards a bar zinc. In front of us he serves himself a glass of wine. To finish, he asks for selfies in a bed. A sofa favors exchanges while refocusing contemporary art on the meaning of life.

Ben ends by seeing himself as Minister of Foreign Affairs because it is the real challenge of our generation to promote good understanding between all peoples.

Incredible well of knowledge on the movements of the artistic scene, he transmits us all his knowledge. Among the abundance of works presented, tolerance and self-mockery remain a common thread of free choice.

Thanks again to the artist-philosopher for your sincere generosity!
