What is numismatics?

numismatics

Since April 2021, Riviera Fine Art, your partner in valuing precious objects, is officially created in the Principality of Monaco!

It is a real pleasure to find you in this blog. We continue to explore remarkable places and search for rare objects. Along the way, we will meet artists and collectors who work all over the Riviera. From yesterday to today, let's rediscover our cultural heritage and the Côte d'Azur art market with a fresh look at the trends.

To begin, let's explore together the little-known topic of numismatics or the science of coins. What should we do with the batches of coins forgotten at the bottom of the library? What values do they have today? You might be surprised by some of the quotes. Very often collectors of old coins are also stamp enthusiasts, i.e. philatelists.

Numismatic market on the rise for exceptional coins

  •  Prince Rainier III (1923-2005), decided to found a museum in Monaco because he believed that the stamp "is the first ambassador of a country". If it is necessary to recognize it, the market of the stamps weakens these last years that of the Coins of collection beats records of sale.
  • The last public auction in Monaco, brought the lot n°805 corresponding to a single coin to the height of 820 000 €. It is "George IV (1820-1830). 5 sovereigns 1831 (5 pounds), London. Gold trial by Wyon."
  • This absolute world record of sales in MONACO in December 2020 deserves all our interest.

Towards a new sales record?

"MDC Monnaie de Collection" in MONACO organizes two numismatic auctions per year. Coin enthusiasts from all continents and all eras meet to exchange exceptional collector's items.

From the Carolingians to the Fifth Republic, the coins make us travel from India to the USA, through Europe or the Middle East. All the civilizations meet around our common History.

The next MDC numismatic auction will take place on Saturday, June 12, 2021.

- Tribute to Mrs. Grace KELLY

The first panel in the entrance hall pays tribute to the RAINIER family. The exhibition "The Grace Kelly years, Princess of Monaco" in 2007, showed how her personality had brought the international influence of the Principality. In addition to cinema and fashion, we admire her contribution to artists in various disciplines.

It is by taking inspiration from of her exceptional career as a modern woman of the 20th century that we wish to contribute to the awakening of the cultural wealth of the Riviera.

- Stamps and archaeological pieces illustrate the evolution of our civilization

The collection of stamps and ancient coins dating back to antiquity impresses with its quantity and variety of themes. Discoveries, science and many other great historical events of the Principality plunge us into an exciting history.

  •  Did you know that the Stamp Office issues a new stamp every month? On June 28th, the Château d'Eiffiat, a historic Grimaldi site in Monaco, will be honored.
  • The machines and tools used in the 19th century give an idea of the work to be done. Printing and engraving required highly technical know-how. On a day in 1937, one can imagine the excitement and noise around the press on display.
  • Stamps and coins help to strengthen the ties between generations.

In order to diversify your investments, numismatics certainly deserves further study.
