1st exhibition of minerals, fossils, jewelry and meteorites in Cannes

his weekend at the Palm Beach Casino, the first mineral, fossil, jewel and meteorite show organized in Cannes received a large public who came to admire the diversity of nature from the four corners of the planet.

A mineral show

In general, the stands are divided into several areas of interest:

  • Mineralogy specialists who present raw minerals, fossils, meteorites, or fossilized wood,
  • the creators of costume jewelry with frames most often silver, composed of amber, turquoise or amethysts,
  • gemstone sellers. Gemstones, both rough and cut, are of interest to the jewelry industry and collectors. The best known are diamonds, sapphires, rubies and emeralds, but other varieties such as tourmalines, topaz, garnets and spinels deserve equal attention for their color and sparkle. Prices are affordable.

In Cannes, GEMSLOVE presents a beautiful selection of quality and natural gemstones: fire agates (30 to 50 euros), quartz inclusions, watermelon tourmalines (pink and green) and cat's eye moonstones (5 euros per carat) caught my attention. From the feldspar family, moonstone gives off a phenomenon of "adularescence" and in this particular case forms a white line called "cat's eye" visible under a lamp or sunbeam.

The carved corozo nut representing a turtle is a classic; it is the fruit of the palm tree classified as a vegetable ivory, used since the XIX th century for the manufacture of small objects such as buttons, rings...

Collection of stones to create jewelry

More and more gemologists are visiting the major international gem shows such as the Hong Kong Jewellery Gem Fair, the Tucson Mineral Show (Arizona Turquoise) and the Sainte Marie aux Mines Mineral Show in the Haut Rhin region of France, while others are directing their contacts directly to the mines in Madagascar, Africa and other well-known places. They are returning with their original selections presented in the mineral shows organized in the region.

Originally, these were "sample exchanges" between collectors. Today, the stone trade has developed internationally from Southeast Asia, which has become the hub.

Auctions are increasingly offering minerals and meteorites, such as the site Catawiki, an auction platform. Asteroid, comet or materials from the Moon and Mars, all samples are classified. Meteorite researchers are on the lookout for all new resources that they locate with their GPS. This position filmed on cell phones attests the date and place of origin when a meteorite is purchased by a collector.

Prices have risen sharply for quality and natural gemstones as well as rare minerals and fossils which can go up to several thousand euros. The variety of products presented and at all prices, for this Cannes Show, still gives everyone the possibility to find his happiness.
